His family ran a small domaine in Lorraine, making wine for the locals of Bulligny in the Cote de Toul. While Lorraine was once a productive winemaking region, its production dropped dramatically around 1914 1918, and afterwards, with Champagne rising to prominence and Alsace nearby, most local winemakers left to work more lucrative vineyards elsewhere.
