D1Baseball.com is one of the most visited college baseball sites in the country, delivering live scoring, rankings, statistics, and premium coverage for Division 1 baseball fans. But they had a unique problem: high-traffic sports sites typically don’t operate under steady demand. Traffic remains manageable through the off-season, then climbs steadily from February through July, with several predictable periods of significantly elevated traffic. This variety in website visitors puts the site’s hosting infrastructure to the test.

Integritive, the web development agency behind D1Baseball, needed a hosting provider that would respond quickly, communicate clearly, and treat the site like the mission-critical platform it is.

The Objective

Keep D1Baseball.com fast, secure, and available during peak traffic surges — including the site’s highest-demand periods — while keeping costs predictable and controlled during the off-season. Integritive needed a partner who would take ownership of the infrastructure, not one they’d have to diagnose problems for.

The Challenge

During peak baseball season, website traffic to D1Baseball.com spikes significantly. Their previous hosting provider wasn’t designed to properly handle the site’s seasonal demands. CPU utilization would max out, pages would load slowly, and the site experienced outages during critical periods — including crashing during the busiest weekend of the season, from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening, and becoming unresponsive or significantly sluggish several times a week for the remainder of the peak season.

A misconfigured Redis cache contributed to repeated and prolonged downtime, creating ongoing operational challenges during peak traffic periods. The hosting environment itself introduced complexity that made troubleshooting and performance management more difficult during periods of high demand.

When Integritive would reach out to the provider for help, support escalations often did not address the underlying infrastructure issues. Rather than resolving root causes, support responses focused primarily on log notices and surface-level symptoms. Integritive’s developers found themselves diagnosing infrastructure problems that their hosting partner should have been solving, and presenting findings to the provider before anything moved forward.

The site was also a regular target for bot traffic and DDoS attempts, and Integritive had limited ability to respond. DNS was routed through the provider’s Cloudflare account, and both teams had limited ability to make timely security adjustments on their own.

The Solution

DataYard works closely with web development agencies that want a hands-on hosting partner, not just a vendor. After getting a detailed picture of Integritive’s environment and traffic patterns, we built a hosting infrastructure designed around how D1Baseball operates.

We deployed a dedicated and customized virtual server environment with flexible resource scaling, including a leaner configuration during the off-season, and additional CPU and memory provisioned for baseball season, with further capacity available ahead of peak periods with only a few days’ notice. Billing is flat and predictable for both periods, so there are no surprise invoices when traffic climbs.

On the security side, we implemented additional Cloudflare protections with customized WAF policies, bot mitigation, and IP access controls to actively address DDoS attempts and unwanted traffic, including configuring firewall and NGINX rules to restrict server access exclusively to Cloudflare origins and trusted IPs, significantly reducing the risk of direct-origin attacks bypassing Cloudflare protections. Integritive continues to have direct co-administrative access to Cloudflare and DNS, which gives their team the ability to manage security rules and block threats without waiting on a support ticket.
